Solid or continuous flight auger drilling involves a continuous, solid stem auger. As the auger rotates, it allows the soil to be extracted to the surface, enabling our drillers to retrieve relatively undisturbed soil samples and engineers to establish a highly accurate soil profile. Solid stem augers can also be used to establish monitoring wells and install appropriate instrumentation in varied soil conditions.
Solid stem augering is the fastest and most effective way to retrieve samples in soft soil conditions.
Hollow stem auger drilling uses a hollow, cylindrical stem and auger flights. Once the desired depth is achieved, samples can be extracted through the hollow stem without having to remove the auger from the ground. Hollow stem auger drilling is conducive in formations where loose gravels or unconsolidated soils are present and the borehole is unable to remain open. Disturbed samples, well installations and instrumentation installations are achievable in hollow stem application, along with SPT and Shelby Tube sampling.
